Rehabilitation in times of war: NGO “Nazareth”

Lviv organization “Nazareth” is engaged in helping people addicted to alcohol, drugs and gambling. And recently the community became a grantee of the Zagoriy Foundation.

The organization’s activities began in 2006. During this time, about 5000 people have undergone rehabilitation. Since 2015, there have been veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war among them. “It is difficult for some people to socialize or adapt in a peaceful environment, it is difficult to share their experiences with loved ones, and remoteness and the use of psychotropic substances or gambling helps to freeze stress, fear and problems,” Maryna explains the reasons.

Observing the impact of the war on the psychological state of a person since 2014, on February 24, representatives of the organization made a clear decision to continue their activities. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 96 people were undergoing rehabilitation in “Nazareth”.

But this is not the only area in which the community has joined. Since the first day of the full-scale invasion, the organization has been providing shelter to displaced persons. In six months, Nazareth has hosted 410 people. Some stayed only for a few days, some – for several months. During this time, the community even helped 200 people to go abroad, to safe places in Poland, Italy, Germany.

Currently, about 130 people live in “Nazareth”. Half of them are displaced persons, the other part is undergoing rehabilitation.

In addition to housing, food and medical care, they have compiled a spiritual and psychological program for the adaptation of immigrants in a peaceful environment.

“When I first arrived at the shelter, I was so devastated, just broken. And now I feel as if I’m coming back to myself”

– shares her impressions of the program a displaced person from Mariupol Halyna.

Of course, such a scale of work required many hands. Representatives of “Nazareth” admit that the first two months they worked non-stop.

Only in mid-April the workers began to gradually return to their usual schedule.

As whole Ukraine, Now “Nazareth” is waiting for the victory and wants as many addicts as possible to become free.

Coordination hub in times of war: NGO “Inspiration family”

The start of a full-scale russian invasion came as a shock to every Ukrainian. Battling fear, anger and confusion, the charity sector had to quickly decide what to do next. While most people’s work was on hold or on the back burner, non-profit organizations had to take care not only of themselves and their families, but also of employees and beneficiaries.

We want to share with you the story about our grantees, who changed the focus of their work in wartime, and continue to implement new projects and respond to urgent requests.

NGO “Inspiration Family Foundation”, one of the winners of the grant competition by Zagoriy Foundation “Supporting the work of non-profit organizations in times of war”.

Until February 24, the foundation created systemic changes in the field of adult oncology, provided informational and emotional support to patients, and conducted educational events on the topic of cancer.

Now, the main activities of the organization are:

— Coordination and consultation of cancer patients being treated in Ukraine.

— Assistance in finding treatment abroad for cancer patients who cannot continue it in Ukraine.

— Finding and providing humanitarian aid to cancer centers.

During the full-scale war, the Foundation processed more than 1,200 requests, helped more than 120 patients receive treatment abroad, and more than 30 patients received consultations from doctors in Ukraine.

We believe that support and help now is extremely valuable. Our team is proud to be involved in the activities of such strong organizations. Together we can do more!

Informational front: NGO “Dostupno.UA”

Amazing story of Zagoriy Foundation’s grantee: NGO Dostupno.UA. Before the full-scale war the organization promoted the trend of accessibility and an active lifestyle, and worked on changing society’s stereotypes about people with disabilities. After February 24, the organization engaged in evacuation, humanitarian aid, financial support of their beneficiaries, and started raising funds for the Ukrainian defenders. They worked like this throughout the spring.

Later, when the demand for evacuation went down, the organization began to help people integrate in their new place of residence through employment assistance. It was facilitated by the cooperation with the Polish agency Job Impulse, which provides all information on various labor issues — from creating a CV to actual vacancies.

During this time, the organization established several more international partnerships: in particular, with the Funkibator organization from Sweden, representatives in Poland, and interaction with volunteers in Germany.

The team dreams of a barrier-free, accessible, inclusive environment, because everyone should have equal opportunities, regardless of the level of mobility.

Moreover, the NGO implemented information campaign with the grant support of the Zagoriy Foundation.

Since the start of the information project, 7 materials about opportunities for persons with disabilities have been published:

— what help families with children with disabilities can get;
— where to get comprehensive rehabilitation for people with disabilities;
— what benefits Ukrainians can receive during the war;
— emergency rehabilitation assistance to people with disabilities;
— evacuation of people with disabilities from the hot spots of Donetsk region;
— is it necessary to pass a commission during the war to confirm disability?
— now it has become easier for people with disabilities to draw up documents for crossing the border of Ukraine.

We admire the resilience of our grantees and continue to thank our partners for supporting the development of Ukrainian organizations this year through grant competitions.
