Prostir Dobra

Cultural and arts space for children and adults in Yaremche.

Background

This project was born out of the belief that each of us has potential that is revealed through creativity and collaboration. The space opened in 2023 in the basement of the Parish of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Yaremche.

The name “Prostir Dobra” (lit. “Space of Common Good”) was inspired by the words of Mytropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, who talked about the importance of working for a common good. The latter implies active engagement, cooperation, and each person’s responsibility toward the community to which they belong. Andrey Sheptytsky was not only a Metropolitan and spiritual leader, but also a reformer and entrepreneur who supported education, culture, and economic development, founded cooperatives and businesses, saved Jews during the Holocaust, and promoted interreligious dialogue and unity of the Ukrainian people.

Mission

To become the heart of the local community and a catalyst for positive change through development, inspiration, and shared opportunities.

Key Activities

Creative workshops

Prostir Dobra offers free classes for people of all ages — ranging from cooking (with its own kitchen) to modern technology, chess, math, English, theater, social media marketing, cheerleading, and more. There are both regular classes and special camps or courses.

Cultural events

Cultural events are also held here to inspire the community to learn about and preserve Ukrainian traditions. The community participates in celebrations of traditional holidays, performances, and concerts organized by Prostir Dobra — from singing hayivky (Easter songs) to the Christmas vertep (travelling theater and performance).

Information and educational events

The space supports the Plast center (Ukrainian scouting organization) in Yaremche and organizes events for local teachers featuring inspiring speakers.

Prostir Dobra also houses the Prosvita Reading Room, a free library for community members. The space hosts book presentations and author meet-and-greets, runs a book club for seniors and a literature club for teens, holds seasonal reading challenges, and publishes its own newspaper, i.e., The Common Good Library.
