An animal adoption and re-homing center where animals not only stay while waiting for new families but also undergo training and socialization to prepare them for a second chance in life.
Background
The project emerged from Kateryna Zagoriy’s regular missions to rescue animals from de-occupied and frontline territories. It has since grown into an adoption center in Yaremche capable of housing more than 40 dogs and cats at a time.
Zachyn marks the beginning of a new chapter in an animal’s life as it finds its perfect owner. It also marks the start of a new chapter in a person’s life as their family grows.
It is not a shelter but an adoption center. On the one hand, its mission is to help animals find new families. To this end, cynologists and felinologists work with the animals, teaching them to follow simple commands, use the litter box, go up and down stairs, go out into the city, and interact with other animals. In the end, you get an animal ready to live with humans in society.
On the other hand, the project works with the public to promote a humane attitude toward animals.
Mission
We don’t just rescue animals and find them homes. We prepare them for life with humans.
How Zachyn Works
The animals have their own training program, where they learn basic commands, how to live in a city, and how to interact with humans and other animals. At the end of their training, they receive their own report card — a “laport” 😉 (wordplay in Ukrainian: “lapa” meaning a “paw” + ending “port” from “passport”).
We will help you choose the right pet. We will talk to the potential adoptive family and ask all the tough questions to make sure you are a good match and that you have no illusions about life with your new friend — to make a conscious decision. Yes, sometimes we have to refuse.
We will deliver the dog to you completely free of charge if the match is successful. This applies within Ukraine, and sometimes in Europe and the US.
Along with the dog, you will receive a starter kit — after all, what’s a new family without one? — including food, a pet bed, and sometimes clothing.
All animals that come to Zachyn undergo a veterinary examination, receive treatment, and get all necessary vaccinations.
After a successful adoption, the team stays in touch with the family, offers advice, and asks for photos and videos of the happy pet. And we are always ready to help.
Yes, sometimes animals are returned. We try to make sure that happens less often. When it still does, we start the process of finding a family all over again. We don’t abandon our pets — they are part of our flock.
In 2024, 70 animals moved to new homes, and in 2025, 92 furry friends found their families.
